The Need and the Solution

Eastham Public Library’s Demand for Increased Services

Library use has doubled since the last renovation.

Computer and internet use continues to increase and there are not enough computers to meet the demand.

Inadequate Space

There is no dedicated meeting room or study space. The library must rent or borrow space at local venues for programs expected to draw more than 15 people.

There is no teen area.

The children’s room is overcrowded and lacks storage
space and sufficient technology.

Inadequate Handicap Accessibility

Handicap access needs to be improved to service all areas of the building.
Cost Efficiencies of the New Building

There is an inefficient heating and cooling system. The present systems have been retrofitted and need frequent repairs.

The roof, windows, exterior shingle siding, plumbing, and wiring all date from the last renovation and are not energy efficient.

The Solution

The new library will provide materials and services for all ages. There will be access for all residents, a separate teen space, space for children’s programs, room for an expanded collection, a quiet study space and an “Eastham” room to safely house the library’s unique collection of local history and genealogy materials. It will be a gift from one generation to the next.
