Perilous Refuge: Endangered Shorebirds
Wednesday, July 8 at 4:00 p.m.
Coming home to nest or rest during migration on sandy beaches is far riskier than in Thoreau's day when the piping plover was the most memorable sound of the Outer Cape. Please join us as the National Seashore's top shorebird expert, Mary Hake, explains the important role seashore beaches play in the life cycle of threatened shorebirds such as the piping plover, least tern, American oystercatcher and red knot, and what we are doing to help them survive on the edges of our world. Families are invited to the Earle Mountain Room of Eastham Town Hall on Wednesday, July 8 at 4:00 p.m.

Call for Turnip Recipes
Deadline extended to June 6
The Eastham Library is collecting tried and turnip true recipes for possible inclusion in a soon to be published cookbook featuring Eastham's pride and joy ... the Eastham Turnip. Tuber enthusiasts have been clamoring for a turnip cookbook but all copies of the Library's 2007 cookbook, First Encounter with a Turnip, sold out years ago.
The annual Turnip Cook-Off, the culinary cornerstone of the Turnip Fest, has received a wide variety of creative and original entries over the past 12 years. Curried Coconut Turnip Soup, Turnip Pumpkin Cheesecake, Turnip Donuts and Eastham Turnip Apple Ice Cream Pie are a few of the dishes to be highlighted in this new publication.
Cookbook compilers are seeking recipes in all categories, from appetizers to desserts. While the Library has all recipes submitted in the annual Turnip Cook-Off for 2013 and 2014, previous contest entrants are encouraged to share their turnip delights. The committee is especially hopeful that cook-off champions from 2008 through 2012 will send their prize winning recipes. Recipes should include list of ingredients used, measurements, complete instructions, pan sizes and baking temperature.
Include name, phone and/or email address. Recipes can be sent electronically to firstname.lastname@example.org or by mail to Marianne Sinopoli, Eastham Public Library, 2510 State Highway, Eastham MA 02642. Deadline for submission is June 6, 2015.
The revised and updated Friends of the Eastham Library Turnip Cookbook should be available in time for the 2015 Turnip Festival scheduled to held Saturday, November 21st at Nauset Regional High School.
