The Eastham Public Library Legacy How will a new library enhance Eastham? FAQs - Frequently Asked Questions An Essential Community Resource!
|
FAQs Frequently Asked Questions Why are the Library Trustees planning for the new library? The use of the library has doubled since last major renovation (1988). The existing building is in need of major renovation. The new library will be handicap accessible. The space for materials, while inadequate, has taken over space for people. The current library is not energy efficient. The new library will fill the need for an Eastham multipurpose community space. The new Eastham Public Library, with flexible spaces, will serve the changing needs of the community.
The timing for municipal construction is right due to lower interest rates and more competition for construction bids. Will Eastham lose part of its history? No. The plan is to replace all but the historic portion of the library. The past and the future will come together. Will the Eastham Public Library stay on Samoset Road? Yes. A survey of residents and visitors was in favor of the current site by an overwhelming (96%) majority. Plans have been developed for the Samoset Road site and the adjoining town owned lot. What is our new library going to cost? Total costs will be $9.2 million for a 16,800 square foot building. The cost to furnish and landscape Eastham’s new library, and the cost for temporary quarters for the library, during construction are included. What is driving the cost? There are requirements and regulations for municipal construction that are in place to protect Eastham and its residents. Prevailing wage requirements for publicly owned construction also add significantly to cost. How are we going to pay for it? The Library Trustees have applied for a library construction grant from the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners. This will cover more than 50% of project costs. The Town of Eastham will be asked to fund up to $4.5 million (debt exclusion). The Friends of the Eastham Public Library have pledged support for a major fundraising campaign. How much would it cost to renovate the existing building? A cost estimate has been done for renovation and upgrade of the existing building. The cost is about $2.5 million. Significant upgrades would trigger compliance with state regulations for a public building, including ADA compliance, public water supply, and fire suppression. The cost of renovation would not include any additional space.
